Don’t Skip Hiring Movers: How To Save Money On A Move

How can you save money on a move—while still hiring movers? A DIY move may seem like the most cost-saving option. But it isn't always the best (or only) answer. If you need to move on a budget, take a look at the ways to save money without sacrificing the services professional movers offer.

Use Your Furniture To Pack Other Items

Instead of just moving your dressers, drawers, and desks, use these larger pieces to pack smaller items. You don't have to spend money on pricey plastic bins or cardboard boxes. Instead of buying containers, pack as much as you reasonably can into your furniture.

Make sure to secure drawers, doors, or anything else that could open mid-move before the moving contractors arrive. Even though your bedroom dresser's drawers may seem secure, they may not stay shut for the entire trip from point A to point B. Use soft fabric strips to tie these, and other, drawers closed. Avoid packing tape or anything else with a sticky adhesive. While tape will hold drawers and doors shut, it could peel off paint or leave behind a noticeable residue.

Use Clothing and Linens To Pack Fragile Items

Bubble wrap and packing paper are expenses that you don't need right now. But this doesn't mean you should move your fine china, artwork, ceramic vases, or anything else that's fragile/breakable without padding.

Instead of store-bought packing products, upcycle old (clean) t-shirts, towels, bed sheets, pillowcases, and quilts. Turn these (or other similar) items into protective padding and wrap them around plates, glassware, knick-knacks, and more.

Use Containers That You Already Have To Pack Your Household Items

What should you do if you run out of drawer space or don't have dressers and desks to pack all of your household items in? Look around your house to find other items that you can upcycle into packing containers. These could include:

  • Old product boxes. Do you still have the box your toaster, TV, or blender came in? Reuse these boxes to re-pack the items again.

  • Cardboard shipping boxes. Do you have a stack of cardboard boxes left over from online holiday gift shopping? Turn these boxes into upcycled moving containers.

  • Large yogurt containers. These plastic containers (with lids) are the perfect size to pack small knickknacks, jewelry, and similar items. Thoroughly wash and dry these containers before you pack anything.

Along with boxes and plastic containers, reuse old totes, luggage, shopping bags, or pillowcases. You can pack socks, t-shirts, other clothing items, towels, bed linens, children's toys, and more in these bags.
